‘Hidden’ fumes from melting glaciers could speed up global warming, warn scientists

Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas contributor to climate change after carbon dioxide (Picture: Unsplash) Melting Arctic glaciers are unearthing a new source of potent greenhouse gas, warns new research. As the Arctic gets warmer, scientists found shrinking glaciers are exposing bubbling groundwater springs which could provide an underestimated source of methane. It is the second most important greenhouse gas contributor to climate change after carbon dioxide. The new study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, identified large amounts of methane gas leaking from groundwater springs unveiled by melting glaciers. The research, led by Cambridge University scientists and colleagues from University Centre in Svalbard, Norway, suggests that these methane emissions will likely increase as Arctic glaciers retreat and more springs are exposed. The team say that that the emissions along with other methane leaks from melting ice and frozen ground in the

Why earthquakes happen all the time in Britain but not in Ireland

The village of Tean in Staffordshire, England The village of Tean in Staffordshire, England, was hit by a 3.3-magnitude earthquake on June 28 2023. The tremors caused windows and doors to rattle in the surrounding area. Earthquakes of this nature are not uncommon in Britain (the island including England, Scotland and Wales). In fact, hundreds of earthquakes shake Britain every single year. The majority of these earthquakes are small in magnitude and do not result in any damage. However, there are occasional earthquakes in Britain that have the potential to be destructive. Scientists estimate that the largest possible earthquake in Britain is around a magnitude 6.5 – surpassing the intensity of the magnitude 6.3 earthquake that hit Christchurch, New Zealand in 2011 and killed 185 people. The largest recorded earthquake in Britain so far took place in 1931 near Dogger Bank, 97km off the east coast of England. This earthquake measured 6.1 on the Richter scale and caused damage
